Bayern Munich 7-1 Roma Match Report

 Bayern Munich celebrate

Before the game began, I thought it would be a very close contested game that Roma had a very good chance of getting at least a point out of. It became very clear to me by the 25th minute that Roma, 3-0 down, were out of the game. The eventual 7-1 score line however, I did not anticipate.

Bayern Munich absolutely obliterated Roma in the first half. Five goals ahead at half time and the game was already over. A lovely solo effort from Robben put Bayern one ahead. Gervinho looked very lively at the beginning of the game and almost troubled Neuer with a decent effort on goal before Muller and Gotze combined for the second goal of the match. Once the two goals had been scored, Roma heads dropped. All intensity seemed to have been lost and they stopped pressuring Bayern completely. As soon as Roma lost intensity, Bayern began to run riot.

Although Munich really showed a master class in attacking football and how to move the ball with short, intricate passes; I am extremely disappointed with Roma’s defending. Ashley Cole, arguably one of England’s best ever left backs and in my opinion still England’s best left back, had a very poor game. Having played with Robben at Chelsea, Ashley Cole should know better than anyone that Robben’s preference would be for him to cut back inside the box and strike the ball with his stronger left foot. Knowing this, Ashley Cole still allows Robben inside which led to the first goal. Another poor performance came from Yanga-Mbiwa who during Bayern’s third goal allowed Lewandowski to run in behind him without picking him up, enabling him to head the ball unmarked into the back of the net.

Roma improved drastically in the second half and troubled Bayern on numerous occasions. If it were not for Manuel Neuer in the Bayern net, Roma could have come a lot closer to changing the result. Neuer is certainly the best goalkeeper in the world. Every time I see Neuer play he seems to perform better and better. Neuer denied Gervinho multiple times before he eventually let one ball past him. Bayern were not done just yet, Substitutes Franck Ribery and Xherdan Shaqiri both managed to grab themselves a goal each before the end of the game.
